Safety Vests for Construction Workers: Protection Classes, Standards & Safety Requirements

Safety Vests for Construction Workers - What Protection Classes Are There?

On construction sites, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory when the risk assessment requires it, and even after implementing technical and organizational measures, if hazards to employees still exist.

Why Safety Vests Are Important on Construction Sites

Safety vests increase the visibility of workers and significantly reduce the risk of accidents. Depending on the working environment and the level of risk, the standard defines different protection classes.

These protection classes mainly differ in the size of the fluorescent areas and the number of reflective stripes – the higher the class, the better the visibility and the higher the protection.

Along with the helmet and work pants, the safety vest is one of the most important pieces of equipment. But what protection classes exist, how can you recognize a high-quality safety vest, and what should construction companies pay attention to?

Protection Classes for Safety Vests

In Europe, safety vests are classified according to the EN ISO 20471 standard into three protection classes:

  • Class 1: Visibility in low-risk areas, e.g. in enclosed indoor spaces. KXMF, KXFW, KXEXQ, KXVW, X200
  • Class 2: Minimum requirement for work in road areas or warehouses. KXMF, KXFW, KXEXQ, KXVW, X200
  • Class 3: This offers the highest protection with the largest visibility areas, e.g., for work in poor lighting conditions or heavy traffic. PPE in Class 3 must cover the torso and must either have sleeves with retroreflective stripes or long pants with retroreflective stripes as a minimum requirement. Alternatively, Class 3 can also be achieved by combining two garments that together meet these requirements.

Other Important Work Safety Clothing for Construction Workers

  • Hard hats – essential to protect against falling objects.
  • High-visibility work pants – increase visibility and protect from dirt or injuries.
  • Work gloves – protect against cuts and crushing injuries.
  • Safety shoes – required on every construction site, even if not available at Korntex.
  • Hearing protection – especially when working with loud machinery.

Tips for Purchasing Safety Vests

  • Manufacturer information: These must be included with the safety vest and supplement the label's information with important instructions on storage and care.
  • CE marking: Only certified safety vests may be sold as PPE.
  • Standard indication: The label must include the EN ISO 20471 standard and indicate the protection class.
  • Color: Fluorescent material in Signal Yellow, Signal Orange, or Signal Red for high visibility during the day.
  • Reflective stripes: At least 5 cm, 360-degree horizontally surrounding retroreflective stripes, and optionally on the shoulders for visibility in the dark.
  • Fit: The vest should not be too tight or too loose, ensuring freedom of movement.

Whether safety vests for construction, construction worker vests, or full work safety clothing – the right quality is crucial. Korntex offers a wide range of certified safety vests and accessories specifically designed for use on construction sites.
